Saving the oceans – level 2

On Sunday, more than 100 countries signed a UN treaty to protect the oceans.

The world’s oceans suffer from pollution, acidification, and overfishing, and the biodiversity is decreasing. Countries discussed the treaty for more than 15 years, but one of the problems was that most oceans didn’t belong to anyone, and no law protected them. The main reason why it took so long to sign the treaty was, of course, economic interests.

The treaty aims to protect 30% of the world’s land and sea by 2030. To do that, it is necessary to include nearly 11 million square kilometers of the ocean every year.

Difficult words: treaty (a formal agreement between countries), acidification (when water or soil becomes too acidic), biodiversity (the variety of plants and animals in the world or a particular place).
